Review: 'LEVIN, GEORG'
'Falling Masonry'

-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '2010'

Our Rating:
'Falling Masonry' comes as a taster for Georg Levin's debut album 'Everything Must Change.' Apparenrly, Georg can be described as 'a long-time yet unlikely member of Berlin's electronic music scene. With both his solo project and his production outfit Wahoo he is definitely too much on the soulful side to be a typical representative of the techno and rock sound the city is known for.' This hardly has me champing at the bit.

The rap style grunts and 'uhhs' that occupy the opening bars really do wrong-foot (or should that be wrong-ear?) the listener, and as such, I found myself fully unprepared for the quite remarkable song that follows. The lovelorn Levin croons soulfully over a laid-back and, if truth be told, fairly nondescript backing. So far, so ordinary, even if Georg does have a very smooth and listenable tone. About halfway through, piano and strings and fuller percussion enter the mix, and before you know it, it's a full orchestral film score sweeping majestically from the speakers... luscious and surprising, I can't stop playing it! I've surprised myself with this one...
