Our Rating:
The trouble about being 'hotly-tipped', of course, is that there's a lot further to fall after the hype has worn off. Irish band THE DELORENTOS would, I imagine, understand that particular hard lesson intimately. Since their arrival to a roar of critical approval, their label (Pinnacle) collapsed, they apparently hit a collective writers' block and their singer Ro walked out.

Up against it and with stories of similar failures by artists like David Kitt and Power of Dreams no doubt ringing in their ears, THE DELORENTOS nonetheless licked their wounds and re-grouped. They were given a significant shot in the arm when Ro returned after some soul-searching and now they're back – bloodied, but unbowed – and keen to dismiss thoughts of this being the last chance saloon for them.

Well, they're clearly giving it their best shot at the title. 'S.E.C.R.E.T' is the trailer for their soon-come 'You Can Make Sound' album and it takes that title literally, for it makes a whole lotta noise. It's got piercing guitars, lumbering bass and dense, discoid drumming and to make absolutely sure there are no fatal slips at the final hurdle, it's even got one of those 'spell it out' choruses which can't fail to get arms punching the air in any given big field they'll be gracing this coming summer.

It's not especially original, of course – Bloc Party's first album lurks with intent at all times – but it's certainly urgent and will quite probably keep them in contention. They're not gonna take this lying down and it's hard not to admire 'em for that alone.
