Review: 'MOCO'
'MISS MANTARAY'

-  Label: 'POOLSIDE'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2/6/03'-  Catalogue No: 'POOLSIDE CD 04'

Our Rating:
Apparently known for being purveyors of 'Stupid Cool', Wigan's MOCO are indeed an odd fish. Produced by John Kettle of The Tansads fame (what do you mean you don't remember them?), they are a curious amalgamation of styles, at least if "Miss Mantaray", their second single, is anything to go by.

Kicked off by an odd, cyclical minor chord riff and singer Steve Mobile Jones spewing all sorts of spurious cliches (he sings "it's a tropical heatwave" like it's actually a nuclear strike he's trying to avoid), "Miss Mantaray" is a less-than obvious choice of single, though its' not easily pigeonholed off-beat Glam-bothering does actually get under your skin after a couple of plays.

The B-side, "She's Fine", is a lot more straightforward, reminiscent of some of Iggy and the Stooges' less raucous offerings, with drawly vocals and structured guitar underpinned by an insistent drum and bass, broken up by a sweet uplifting middle section.Overall this is only marginally singed by the flames from the current garage rock explosion.

Wigan - home to the world's greatest Rugby League club and famous for its devotion to pies - has already thrown up musical greats as diverse as George Formby (!) and Richard Ashcroft. None of which gives you a clue to where MOCO are going. And that's probably not a bad thing.
