Our Rating:
Hang on, has this actually started playing yet? The spaces between the sounds are long enough to hold a conversation in, but after about a minute and a half, I can confirm that yes, the first piece, the title track, is starting to get going. Actually, it sounds more like tuning up, a disjointed succession of soft panpipe sounds and some clattering percussion that's anything but rhythmic. Despite this, it's hardly attention-grabbing, either, and I must've zoned out for a bit because the next thing I know it's halfway through track 4, 'mOmWree.' Whatever happened to 'bowbroW' and 'owW'?

I decide I don't really care, as I'm confronted by another cacophonous (de)compostion of thunderous bass booms, clanks and rattles, with the occasional sample thrown in, seemingly at random. Now, I'm more than keen on music that sits at the less commercial end of the spectrum - the more inaccessible the better, as a rule. I actively enjoy noisy, incongruous, arrhythmic rackets that make most people wince, cry, or run from the room screaming with their hands over their ears (sometimes all three) - the kind of aural assaults that the majority wouldn't even consider music are just my bag.

But this... I just can't get into it. Minimal electronica is one thing, but the arrangements on the thirteen tracks that comprise 'Browen' don't sound 'natural' or 'organic,' but accidental. The three 'bonus' tracks are a bit more interesting, with some glitchy whirring fear chords whip over some agitated beats ('enbrO' is particularly nasty, in a good way, while 'enrOwen' is nasty in a repetitive bangin' way), but taken as a whole it's simply a whole mess of aimless titting about in the studio that doesn't go anywhere.
