Our Rating:
Research Turtles are four loveable young mop-tops from Louisiana who take their name from a line Wes Anderson's quirky movie The Life Aquatic .

Founder members are the Norman brothers, Jud (bass, lead vocals) and Joe (guitar/vocals) who, after being smitten by Dad's Beatles collection promptly recruited two mates who shared their taste for the fab four and mod pop in general.

The fuzz guitar of The Riff Song has a hint of Grunge while Mission rips off The Ramones big time (complete with deliberately fluffed 1-2-3-4 intro) but mostly they stay loyal to a swinging sixties spirit with a distinctly British flavour.

With a classic two guitars, bass and drums line-up their songs of true love ways keep things clean, bright and simple. Only the break-up tune, Cement Floor, casts any hint of a shadow over their determined optimism.

Tomorrow is a standout tune but better still is the instantly hummable Damn which contains the winning lines "All the other girls I had /Broke my heart and made me sad/ I don't wanna hurt again/ Let me be your boyfriend".

You may think that nostalgia isn't what it used to be, but Research Turtles' cherry pie naivety has a freshness and charm that you'd have to be hard-hearted to snub.

The whole album is free to download from the band's website,
