Our Rating:
Dublin's TRIST turned in a very satisfying début album 'Sounds Like Apocalypse' a couple of years back, so it's good to know they're still in the fray with this, their new two-track single 'Fear'.

The opening title tune quickly reminds me how drilled and powerful Trist sounded throughout their album. The opening is guitar-based and keening with frontman Conor Breen singing with clarity before the band kick in and set up a suitably searing chorus. Urgency is the watchword and lyrically, Breen seems to view the chaos of the modern world through the bottom of a glass darkly. “I'm staring at this empty bottle, I'm letting go, I'm going where I'll feel no sorrow” he sings at one point, while the band ebb and swell around him.

Nominal flip-side 'The Solution' is no slouch either. This time, the song features some notably gutsy vocals from guest star Lora Dimitrova, while the deceptively floaty and mellow verses meld seamlessly with the seething, anthemic chorus bursts. This time round, the positivity in Breen's lyrics (“help me crawl out of this blackness/ to escape these days of darkness”) is particularly heartening and, with the whole band playing out of their skins, the end results are again wholly impressive.

Falling somewhere between the melodic chainsaw pop-punk of Husker Du and the grand designs of Muse, Trist have a lot going for them. Make a note to have an assignation with them when you can.
