'Grandeur' is Essex trio Shakers in the Dark's debut release, and it's without doubt a statement of intent. The press release places considerable emphasis on the band's diverse influences, and the fact they dig 'atmospheric and danceable music of whatever genre.' They're also keen to set themselves apart from 'other guitar based dance acts.' So, do they have delusions of grandeur (sorry, couldn't resist it), or do they live up to their own hype?
As I said, 'Grandeur' is a statement of intent, and does indeed meld guitar indie with luscious synth sounds and a pulsating dance groove, and what's more, it's done with considerable panache. As much in the style of some of the dancier New Wave bands and some of the Factory roster as New Rave, it's positively bristling hooks that stick in from the first listen. On the strength of this release, Shakers in the Dark could appeal to a very wide fan-base, and have a very bright future indeed.
