Our Rating:
Little Fish's debut demo EP "Revolution" was reviewed on Whisperin' and Hollerin' all the way back in January 2006, since which time the duo's stock has risen to such an extent that Linda Perry produced their forthcoming debut album, "Baffled & Beat", they spent 2009 touring with Eagles of Death Metal and Alice in Chains, and have supported Them Crooked Vultures at no less than the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust. During this four-year period, this rock sensibility seems to have rubbed off on the duo, who appear to have undergone a sort of metamorphosis from what John Brombley described as "Bob Dylan leaning singer-songwriter" fare into a more riotous garage rock style. And on a song like "Am I Crazy?", the change appears certainly to have paid off.

At times quietly seething, at others frenetically ferocious, it does its (un)level best to show the Jekyl and Hyde nature of falling in love. This is in no small part due to lead-singer and guitarist Julia "Juju" Sophie's slightly odd mannerisms. Even sidestepping the excessive PR publicity regarding her intense writing process and her incredible "emotion", you cannot fail to admit that she does deranged pretty damn well. Coming over like the sort of furious psycho who's just inches away from boiling her obsession's favourite bunny, she ranges from lamenting her predicament ("I didn't plan to/fall in love with you") to questioning her sanity ("Am I crazy?/Est-ce que je suis folle?) via the odd explosion of full-blown hysteria ("I'm out of my tiny mind"). The pretty convincing wild-eyed performance is perhaps only trumped by Neil "Nez" Greenaway's tight and taut drumming which holds the whole sorry story together. Juju's loose power chords are simple, at times wildly ramshackle, and pretty effective, but "Am I Crazy?" is principally a vehicle to introduce the general public to the frenzied character of Juju. Gentlemen (and bunnies) beware.
