Review: 'BOY WHO TRAPPED THE SUN, THE'
'KATY'

-  Label: 'GEFFEN'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '5th July 2010'

Our Rating:
The on-going rise of THE BOY WHO TRAPPED THE SUN kinda mystifies me. It's not that there's anything wrong with the quality of the work Colin David McLeod (aka The Boy Who Trapped The Sun) submits, it's just that it's hard to imagine a large corporation putting their trust in such an introspective folk-tinged Indie performer in such reactionary times.

TBWTTS's recent album 'Fireplace' was rightly lauded in these very pages and from it, 'Katy' is certainly one of his better chances of snagging a larger audience. Musically, it's not quite a two-step, but it's still quite jaunty and breathy with an echo or two of The La's. Despite the sonic backdrop, though, it's full of lyrical unrest and there ain't too many sure-fire summer smashes dealing with domestic upheaval (“runnin' out the front door/ like a scene from a shit movie”) and wondering whether to commit to a relationship or not.

'Katy', though, has a certain something, and could be the one to knock on the door for this unassuming Isle of Lewis native. It seems The Boy Who Trapped The Sun may yet go on eclipse a goodly proportion of the competition after all.
