Review: 'Small Machine'
'Repeat / Invite Vampires'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
Well, it may well be a demo - and it may well sound like a demo - but I've heard official studio releases that sound just as rough and ready. On 'Repeat,' I'm reminded of the first couple of Dinosaur Jr. albums, both in terms of production and style, all the way from the buzzy guitars to the fraught vocals. It's rough-hewn and rocky in a grungy way, and as fuzzy as hell, and all the better for being so. To polish it off and pretty it up would be to strip the spirit of the song.

'Invite Vampires' captures a similar spirit. What it boils down to is the simple fact that Small Machine clearly gel as a unit, and focus their collective energies into forging a sound that's early 90s alternative rock all the way, and as such, they do it well. Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but I definitely rate it.
