Review: 'Sick City Club'
'Embarrassing Monday'

-  Label: '181 Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '5th July 2010'

Our Rating:
All to often bands fail to live up to the hyp of their own promotional material. I don't blame the bands, of course, because they rarely write the blurbs. However, I do blame the bands for making it so very difficult for their PR people to present them in an exciting fashion, and to do so convincingly. Sick City Club are a prime example: their latest single is so generic it's... well, indie wallpaper.

We're supposed to believe that they're Birmingham's best new band. If this is actually true, I'm quite relieved not to be stuck with the local live scene in Birmingham right now. They may well have already graced the stage with Zane Lowe, Athlete, Reverend and the Makers and Wiley, and be preparing to support Mr Hudson, The Automatic and The Hoosiers this June, they may well have had the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Gideon Coe, John Kennedy and Nick Grimshaw make positive noises, but then, so have infinite other identikit indie bands. They're probably the 'best new band' in their hometown too.

The most embarrassing thing here is the fact that I have a pair of shades just like the band's singer. But I've been wearing 'em for years. I always was ahead of the fashion. Alas, the same can't be said of Sick City Club...
