Our Rating:
La Shark are five guys from New Cross, London who are not backward in coming forward. They happily describe themselves as "a musical enigma of monumental proportions" and exude a brash, self confidence.
Their look is of that a quirky glam pop cabaret act; their sound is quirky dance-punk : The very camp, whiney voice of one Samuel Geronimo Deschamps is guaranteed to divide audiences. Think of a wired Steve Harley and you'll not be too wide of the mark.
They strike me as a band that will thrive equally on good or bad publicity. Indifference is the response they most fear.
A Weapon tells of a man stuck in a dull marriage which is "far too comfortable". The decadent thrust of the song is evident from the sexed-up video in which a Mr Everyman is attacked by three rabid brides urged on by a crazed priest.
The B side - Modern Man - turns an ironic eye on the quest for a perfect partner. The funky grooves are purposeful enough but I am not convinced that the substance matches the swagger.
I'll reserve a final judgement until I here more from the band but I can't shake the nagging feeling that there is less here than meets the eye.
