Review: 'TWEAK BIRD'
'A Sun /Ahh Ahh (Single)'

-  Label: 'Souterrain Transmissions'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '10th May 2010'

Our Rating:
Tweak Bird are the Bird brothers Caleb (guitar) and Ashton (drums); two country boys from Carbondale, Illinois who have put sibling rivalry aside to form a sludge metal duo with psych-pop leanings. A kind of mild mannered brand of Shitgaze if you will.

They are clearly making friends in all the right places too, getting a slot on the bill of The Melvins curated All Tomorrows Parties 2008 Nightmare Before Xmas as well as nailing a prestigious support slot with Tool. All this before they've even released their debut album produced by Dale Crover of Melvins and Toshi Kasai of Big Business. It is due out in August 2010.

This limited 7" single whets the appetite nicely - a pair of heavy numbers full of strident riffs and positive energy. With the inclusion of sax on the A side and flute on B side , Stampaedo, (courtesy of touring friend John McGovern) they are not your run of the mill metal band.

They kick up a storm but there is nothing dark or menacing in either their sound or image - they come across as hippy offspring who just happen to like metal.

The main weak link is that the vocals are a bit lightweight and get buried beneath the power chords. Nonetheless, I'd guess they are definitely a band worth catching live and I'm pretty sure their album will help to extend their circle of admirers still further.
