Review: 'SUPER FURRY ANIMALS'
'GOLDEN RETRIEVER'

-  Label: 'SONY MUSIC'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'JULY 2003'

Our Rating:
Like the weather and the state of Courtney Love's underwear, you never quite know what's gonna happen next with the Super Furry Animals erratic, but generally worthwhile-following career. The last word utilised extremely loosely indeed.

However, "Golden Retriever" will be something of a boon for those of us who've been missing the Furries of, say "Mario Man" or "God! Show Me Magic" as it finds Bethesda's finest kicking back with this slice of Glammed-up, psycho-delia, full of T-Rexian riffing, seductive female backing vox, enormous drums and some token Moog-y weirdness, just in case normality was threatening to sneak in through the back door.

Lord only knows whether this is the kind of fun-packed maximum heaviosity we can expect from the forthcoming SFA album, but the classic potty intro line ("Hey! said the devil as he met her at the roundabout" intones Gruff like it's something you encounter going down the corner shop every day) and the insanely ace stereo-phased crescendo alone are more than enough to plant the Furries singularly skewhiff slap bang onto your radar once again.

"Golden Retriever" could easily be called 'Golden Earring' instead, such is its' balls-out Glam stomp, but it's fun, cheeky and overcooked in the way only SFA can plausibly get away with. Nice one lads: keep necking the mushrooms.
