Review: 'ICE BLACK BIRDS'
'As Birds We'd Be Fine / Doors'

-  Label: 'Laissez Faire Club Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '17th June 2010'

Our Rating:
'Epic' is a word that's become almost as chronically overused and misapplied as 'iconic.' The press release promises an 'epic' chorus. The opening bars sound like a more produced take on Bauhaus' first B-Side, 'Boys.' But then it all goes a bit Corrs, only with a bloke who sounds vaguely like Kevin Rowland at times doing the vocals. There's also way too much vocal. Sure, the guitars kick in and there are clearly 'anthemic' aspirations when it comes to the chorus, but it sure as hell ain't epic. In fact, it all sounds a bit thin, despite the terrace-chant backing vocals and overall, 'As Birds We'd be Fine' is shamefully lacking in any kind of subtlety.

Double A-side 'Doors' does have a swaggering boogie about it, and delivers a cheery-sounding raucous stomp. The song is most notable for the echo-heavy falsetto that singer Sam shifts into at the mid-point, but none of this makes it stand out particularly.
