'DROP YOUR GUARD'

-  Label: 'TURNTABLE SPOILSPORTS'
-  Genre: 'Pop'

Our Rating:
The current vogue for all things Electro-Pop seems to have been nearing saturation point for a while now. Yet there’s always room for one more, right?

If that one more is relevant, yes. In the case of Australian duo it seems fair to let them squeeze through the back door anyway. While I’m not sure they are exactly the “perfect symbiosis of man and machine” their PR blurb gushes of, they certainly arrive with a spring in their collective step.

Their new single ‘Drop Your Guard’ is a sassy li’l number. It peddles a hybrid electro-pop sound, built upon spring-heeled beats, clipped and spiky guitar figures and Candice Butler’s attention-grabbing vocals which veer from hectoring rap to coolly seductive chanteuse within the course of about, ooh, 15 seconds. Such is its’ cheeky confidence, it can’t help but recall female-fronted electro-tinged forbears such as Garbage or Moloko, but its’ brash charm will force its’ way into your heart after a few plays regardless.

Metals, then, do their genre mash-up thang rather well here. It’s too early to predict whether they will end up as precious or scrap, but their mineral make up here suggests they will be durable at least.
