Review: 'CORBETT, MARK'
'Crocodiles EP'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '13th December 2010'

Our Rating:
Losing Today have named Mark Corbett as being 'one to watch', while his PR claims that he possesses 'a voice somehow both calming and urgent and lyrics that remind us of a folk sound from a previous generation.' Right, so it's new and old, exciting and sedative all at the same time, I've had enough acoustic / folk music in the last year to last me a lifetime and every artist seems to be 'one to watch.' Most, of course, sink without trace, and deservedly so.

So is Corbett as special as we're supposed to believe? Not really. The production's not up to much and the songs, while inoffensive enough, don’t exactly stand out. The five tracks on this EP - of which the reverby post-rock closer 'Instrumental' is by far the most interesting - reveal that Corbett's a competent if rather uninspired songwriter, an ok if unremarkable singer, and probably a nice guy. He's no doubt a very good busker, too, but I'd not actually pay to own any of his music.
