Review: 'WEISSTRONAUTS, THE'
'In Memphis'

-  Label: 'Sool Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '1st November 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'SOLE 004'

Our Rating:
The Weisstronauts are Boston-based instrumental rock band formed in 1999 and named after producer/engineer/mixer Pete Weiss (also of Sool).

The band line-up is a moving target but here comprises three lead guitarists, bass and drums (plus a guest vibraphone player).

From this you might expect a hard-nosed blast of Psych-rock but instead you get four relatively low-key blues orientated mood pieces.

The EP was recorded "almost entirely live" at Ardent Studios, Memphis during a break in the band's June 2008 tour (which begs the question as to why it has taken two years to see the light of day in the UK/EU!)

Last Train to Shartlesville is an uneventful two and half minute blues jam; Cat Burglar and Exit Sandman are forgettable lounge numbers while Ode to Billie Joe is a respectful and uninspired version of Bobbie Gentry's massive C&W hit.

All in all a strangely subdued and anonymous affair.
