Born out of a love of Fleetwood Mac, John Martyn and UK Northern Soul, Anglo-American duo Rue Royale's brand of Lo-Fi Folk / Americana is all about the melody. Their first album won them a substantial cult fanbase in mainland Europe, and this, the lead single from their forthcoming sophomore effort, has already been picked up by 6Music's Gideon Coe.
It's not hard to see why they’ve been attracting such attention. 'Halfway Blind' has a moody piano that rumbles in the background on this sparse yet layered sliver of dream-like acoustic magnificence. In fact, the instrumentation reminds me of some of Cranes' work and while neither Ruth nor Brooklyn Dekker's vocals in any way resemble Alison Shaw's, this means they've got a much broader commercial appeal.
