Review: 'Scanners / Honeytone Cody / Sombre'
'York, The Duchess, 24th March 2011'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
It's 8.30 and Sombre take the stage to play a set of dreamy, melodic slowcore shoegaze. More serene than sombre, they show a musical maturity and technical skill well beyond their years. It's a decent start to the evening, and no mistake.

Honeytone Cody up the stakes further with a show of the kind of standard that many bands could only dream of. Mean, moody and as tight as hell, they deliver their set of heavily rhythmic, bass-driven art rock with a cool nonchalance. Dark - as in dramatic, rather than depressing - and at times positively explosive, the music is never less than captivating, and the forthcoming EP can't come soon enough. From overhearing a few conversations outside afterwards, it would seem that I wasn't the only one who thought that they stole the show.

In fairness, Scanners had a tough act to follow, and had more than their share of technical difficulties. Muted mics and feedback were all contributing factors, and the set had to be paused midway through when Matthew managed to sustain a head wound after a collision with the low beam at the side of the stage. Stumbling back to the dressing room, the remaining three band members are left in temporary disarray. He makes a returns shortly afterwards, head bandaged, and heroically soldiers through the remainder of the set. To give them their due, despite such setbacks, Scanners turn in a lively set packed with punchy new wave-influenced nuggets culled largely from their debut album 'Violence is Golden' to emerge triumphant and bring to a close a cracking night of quality music.
