Review: 'KYTES'
''URSA MAJOR' THE GREAT BEAR EP'

-  Label: 'Self-release (www.myspace.com/wearekytes)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '14th March 2011'

Our Rating:
Crystal-clear production is apparent from the start of the latest KYTES EP, as rhythm section funk precedes the chiming and distortion of opener 'There's Milk On My Lips'. Clocking in just over the five minute mark that three out of the EP's four tracks apire to, the lyrics are both spoken and shouted as the track restlessly twists and turns through several changes of direction.

Eccentricities include the gameshow ethics and acid-jazz sensibilities that kick-start the bizarrely-titled 'Oh, Don Piano!' before giving way to mind-numbing riff-repetition as the track picks up and discards momentum in equal measures during a reckless bid to drill itself a permanent place in your heart.

Cymbal crashes give way to the rapid-fire jerk of all-out guitar warfare as the Lichfield rockers grind their way through a hollowed-out jam to finally emerge bathed in the funk afterglow of the track's eventual soundscape.

In places, there's a mindlessness that's reminiscent of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: the band's funk/rock hybrid sound lifts their music out of the rut ploughed by many of their peers. Furthermore, the four tracks included here are relentless and endearing way above any perceived shortcomings. Is it worth a listen? Dead right it is!
