Review: 'GUNNING FOR TAMAR'
'DEAF COW MOTEL (EP)'

-  Label: 'WALNUT TREE'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'February 2011'

Our Rating:
This is the first E.P. from the Oxford based four piece who formed just over a year ago. The band comprises Joe Wallis (lead vocals/guitar), Dan Pollard (guitar/keyboards/vocals), D’Arcy King (Drums) and Ben Green (bass). The have made quick strides, having already been featured on XFM and BBC Introducing.

The EP consists of four tracks, all of which fall well within the indie guitar rock genre. The opening track ‘German Treasure Island’ is a blast of alternative guitar pop with chiming guitars competing against a raw drum beat. The track is upbeat and melodic, although, with an opening line of:- “I saw you fall so far down that rabbit hole/ I got to grab your legs.” I’m not quite sure what this is all about.

‘Running With Scissors’ is slower paced but heavier with a long intro that builds a mood of darkness and foreboding. The lyrics are far more sombre in tone:- “I can’t bring myself to move, and I’ve been here for days.” This was by far my favourite track on the EP.

‘God Made Colours’ opens with a charming guitar line and somewhat wistful, reflective lyrics:- “You can’t miss what you never had/ The world is framed in black and white/ She longs to see with her own eyes, but she can’t even comprehend/The colours that they would find.”

The final track, ‘Bonfires’ is more experimental, but by this time, I think the best has passed. Overall, I thought that this was a good E.P. and would hope to see the band live in support of this fairly soon.
