Review: 'LOWE, JEFF'
'Suicide River'

-  Album: 'Hitchcock Cafe'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'March 2011'

Our Rating:
In Germany they call it an earworm, when a tune sticks in your head and you cant seem to get rid of it. Theres a refrain in Jeff Lowes new single Suicide River. Its not quite a chorus because it has no words. Thats as earwormy as they come. Sometimes these earworms harbour tunes you don't even like. Fortunately not in this case.

The catchy element comes from the background girl singers chanting in a style resembling a Native American wardance. In fact, they represent the Sirens of Suicide Vale who promise to rescue a boy from suicide as long as he sings his own songs.

Its a modern day fairy tale laden with symbolism and a gentle dig perhaps at the X-Factor syndrome. Jeff Lowe, who has a philosophy degree, is known mainly as a writer and a session musician who has played and written for many bands such as the Cutting Crew and Stoney. This is an interesting blend of folk and rock that bears several listens.
