Review: 'Black Angels, The'
'Haunting at 1300 McKinley'

-  Label: 'Blue Horizon'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '28th March 2011'

Our Rating:
The Black Angels' third album, 'Phosphene Dream' didn't exactly receive the hottest of critical receptions. Speaking as a fan of the band, I have to admit that I found it to be something of a let-down, lacking as it did that certain something that made the previous releases special.

Removed from its album context, 'Haunting at 1300 McKinley' seems to work slightly better: on its own merits it's is a decent enough single, an uptempo slab of heavy garage psychedelia that has a hint of r'n'b swagger about it. It's also perhaps best if you try to forget it's The Black Angels, too, because in bringing the psychedelic groove way up to the fore, the swampy sonic haze that permerates their first two albums is pretty much lost. As a consequence, 'Haunting at 1300 McKinley' sounds like a band heavily influenced by The Black Angels, only not quite as good.
