Review: 'Lisa Savidge'
'Lisa Savidge'

-  Album: 'Lisa Savidge' -  Label: 'Black Cactus Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '11th February 2011'

Our Rating:
Right, so Lisa Savidge isn't a person, but a band. A band comprising five pretty ordinary blokes at that, and not one called Lisa. This eponymous release is their second album, and they describe their music as Nu-Gaze, Post Punk, Post Rock – and I guess that sort of sums it up nicely.

'Holding Me' nabs portions of The Cure's 'Just Like Heaven' (or Dinosaur Jr's cover of it) and welds it to a big grunged-up chorus. The vocals are a bit nondescript, but it's not bad in a bouncy 90s sort of a way.

There are some songs that demonstrate a real spark: what could be pretty run of the mill indie if played another way blisters and burns with seering explosions of guitar noise and sneering vocals washed with reverb. Sure, BRMC launched themselves doing something not a million miles away, but hey, if it's well done and they've got the songs, what of it? Lisa Savidge definitely have the songs and do it exceptionally well. Well, some of the time. 'New Song pts 1 & 2' is a bit Springsteen, a bit Kings of Leon, and roughly a third of the songs do simply flop into a run of the mill indie rock rut. Still, there are some pleasant bursts of guitar and closer 'Appalachacha' builds to a shimmering crescendo that provides a most satisfying conclusion.

It's a pity, then, that since I received this CD they've announced that they're splitting up and are playing their final show this week. Oh well: it was good while it lasted, I suppose...
