Review: 'Summon the Crows'
'One More for the Gallows'

-  Album: 'One More for the Gallows' -  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '12th April 2011'

Our Rating:
Southern Lord continue their heavy release schedule of relentlessly heavy music with this crustcore behemoth of an album. It’s a far cry from the slow drone of Sunn O))), arguably the label's biggest act, whose last album saw four tracks fill for sides of vinyl and a full hour: 'One More for the Gallows' has 10 tracks and a total running time of 25 minutes. Still, what 'One More for the Gallows' lacks in duration it more than compensates in blazing intensity, with powerchords played at such a pace they blur into one another, while the drums... the only way anyone could possibly dance to this would be with a wet finger in a live socket.

From beginning to end, it’s unremitting in pace and brutality, and naturally, everything is played at punishing volume with everything louder than everything else to create a sound that’s suffocatingly dense and hits like a battering ram . The lyrics, on the few occasions they’re fathomable, are bleak and claustophobic - ‘there’s no escape, no escape’ K growls darkly on ‘Black Hole’.

And before you know what’s hit you, it’s all over. Devastating.
