Review: 'Ancients'
'Constellations (single)'

-  Label: 'shelsmusic'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '26th September 2011'

Our Rating:
Underground epic-post-hardcore titans Rinoa are no more. BOO!! New outfit Ancients, featuring ex-members of Rinoa, along with Mehdi Safa (Mahumodo and *shels) on vocals and Chris Hoang (Crydebris) on drums have filled the huge gaping hole left by Rinoa. HOORAY!!

The three-track single "Constellations" is their first official release and brilliant it is too. Constellations (the track) is an epic managing to be, by turns, delicate, beautiful and heavy without ever losing focus or coherence. It builds layer upon layer, texture upon texture, the quiet opening giving way to distorted guitars and emotive vocals. Yes, the track gets louder but it is the thickness of the sound that is important and leaves the listener drained.

Second track "De Stella Nova" is a different beast entirely, eschewing the emerging heaviness of "Constellations" in favour of gentler, more delicate layers. It is still epic and dense but shows a contrasting side to Ancients.

The final track is an acoustic rendition of "De Stella Nova" which although offering a worthy, stripped-down take it does not reach the heights of the previous tracks - but then they are at a considerable height.

This is limited to only 100 copies. I suggest you re-order your copy now to avoid missing out on the start of something very special.
