Review: 'Soul Circus'
'The Myth'

-  Label: 'Soundpeople Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '17th October 2011'

Our Rating:
The name rings a bell: perhaps it’s because I see a lot of posters, flyers and gig listings for and around Leeds. I do spend a lot of time attending live music shows in the city, after all. I note there’s also a bar / club in the city by the same name, which may or may not be coincidental.

You see, when it comes to Soul Circus, it’s rather hard to care. While the Leeds scene has, in recent years, thrown up myriad bands of quality – noisy, eccentric, quirky, and just plain weird, from I Like Trains to Pulled Apart by Horses via That Fucking Tank and Blacklisters, it’s also produced major league ‘indie’ acts like The Pigeon Detectives and, of course, Kaiser Chiefs.

It’s the major league that Soul Circus clearly have their eye on, the press release noting that ‘they often draw on a shared love for The Killers, Editors and Doves to produce catchy well crafted pop that has the potential to make some of their peers envious, mixed in with the majesty and size of a U2 or Coldplay.’

On the strength of this, their debut offering, it’s the latter two acts who’ve provided the biggest influence. So what we have here is an example of stadium indie. Big sound, big choruses, zero personality.
