Our Rating:
Long-time W&H favourites The Scratch are back with their first new material in two years, and it’s cracking. I’ve spent the last few months bemoaning all of the crap, manufactured third generation punk that’s doing the rounds, and hearing the back-to-basics choppy four-chord riff of ‘WAG Potential’ is like a breath of fresh air. Rough and ready and straight to the point, The Scratch demonstrate exactly what it’s all about.

It’s clear that The Scratch don’t take themselves too seriously, but thankfully that doesn’t mean they’re cringe-inducingly goofy or embarrassingly whacky. Stripped-down, punky indie and clocking in at around two and a half minutes, ‘WAG Potential’ is humourous, cheeky, exuberant, hooky, and energetic. It’s also bursting with cracking couplets: ‘She walks down the street with a Prada pout/ It won’t be long til the lippy’s out / She is hot she has no doubt / hang around in Sears with her titties out’ and a killer chorus: ‘She’s got WAG potential / she’s so existential’ is simple but effective.

It’s paired with the stompalong ‘Stavin’ Off the Where’s or the Wise’, a raucous rock ‘n’ roll knees-up, complete with honkin’ tonkin’ pianoism. Together, the two songs make for a concise statement and confirm that the single format is by no means dead and suggest the forthcoming album’s going to be a barnstomer.
