Review: 'Lawson, Ellie'
'Lost Without You EP'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '15th November 2011'

Our Rating:
According to the press release, ‘Ellie’s story is a modern tale of overwhelming talent being discovered while young travelling America.’ having been discovered, she found herself signed to Atlantic Records, being described by Billboard Magazine as “the perfect marriage of melody, rhythm and words" and appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ TV show, on which the host bailed on the hype by saying "I play her music over and over again in my house...I predict she will be the hugest, hugest star."

It’s a nice story, and no mistake, and similarly, Ellie makes nice music. But it’s all too easy. Where’s the strife, the hardship, the work, the artistic struggle? In line with her stunning good fortune, Ellie’s songs are easy on the ear, and also pretty unchallenging, and above all, unmemorable. On the evidence of this, at least, the talent is most underwhelming. But Ellie’s sweetly-sung and shrug-inspiringly insipid folky pop is probably the very reason she’s hit it big in the States, and why she’s probably fare well here in the coming months.
