With ‘The Peregrine’, Lawrence English attempts to soundtrack A J Baker’s novel of the same title by capturing the moods of the details and descriptions. Using long, undulating waves interweaving through one another to create richly textured soundscapes, English successfully evokes the freedom of flight.
Soaring, careening and gliding magnificently amidst the clouds far above the ground in an environment soundless but for the winds and the currents, the widescreen effects convey a sense of singularity and space, unencumbered, unshackled, unfettered. Time becomes meaningless and elongates as one becomes a part of the environment. It’s simultaneously relaxing and uplifting. A beautiful and evocative record that makes me think I should probably read the book that inspired it.
