Our Rating:
To prepare us to see the "Hollywood" remake of the film of the first part of Steig Larsson's Millenium trilogy, we watched all three parts of the Swedish original with subtitles on Boxing Day (26.12.11.) as that would make comparing the two a lot easier.

The source being such a thick book means there is plenty of room for two versions of this story of an old mans search for the answers to his niece's dissappearence 40 odd years earlier.

The good news about David Fincher's remake is that he actually shot it in Sweden and the cast is a mix of Swedish, English and Dutch and American actors so it feels authentic in terms of locations even if he chooses to overemphasise that Sweden is a cold place a little bit too much as it has a lot more snowy scenes than in the original.

Daniel Craig is good as the disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist but for me Rooney Mara is nowhere near as compelling as Lisbeth Salander compared to Naomi Rapace. There is also one major bone of contention with her depiction where they deviate from the books where she only ever seems to eat Billy's Pizzas in this film she seems to live on McDonalds which is taking product placement to awful lengths. At least they drink Waynes coffee rather than Starbucks.

The film takes enough of a different take on the material to make it worth seeing both films although the way this film finishes much like the book seems to spend far too much time setting up part two like it is a TV mini-series rather than a stand alone film.

This film also has a great supporting cast that includes Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger doing a great doddery old man routine, while Goran Visnic as Armansky has more of a role than is given to Armansky in the first film. I do, however, feel that the original film tells the story far better than this remake but they are both good films worth seeing. We'll have to see if parts two and three are as good as the originals...
