Review: 'CHARLY SIX'
'TAKE YOUR HANDS FROM ME/ 8TH FLOOR, 6AM'

-  Label: 'www.charlysix.com'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '8th SEPTEMBER 2003'

Our Rating:
CHARLY SIX'S recent single "Get Drunk, Screw, Get High" got a pretty chilly reception around these parts, and it still sounds like a desperate, peurile effort. Hard to believe Mary Anne Hobbs selected them one of the best three Leeds bands on the strength of it, actually.

"Take Your Hands From Me", though, is something of an improvement. Though it's still too generic to really smash an individual hole for itself in the overcrowded guitar-based scheme of things, it has more redeeming features: not least tangible urgency, thunderous drumming from Michael Quarry and convincing, swerving riffs scattering thumbtacks all over the road. For all the screeching, it ain't much of a song, though, and - however obsolete this may sound - that's what still counts when all the palms are greased.

The same could also be said of "8th Floor, Six AM," though again it's a more pleasurable overall listen, with tricksier rhythms and chiming guitars proving the Charlies can get in touch with a softer side. It suits them better in general, though Danny Carr's dismissable Kelly Jones-isms don't help, I'm afraid.

Nonetheless, by no means a bad record. Keep moving, lads. It's still all to play for if you really want it.
