Review: 'Conformist'
'Savages Go Modern!'

-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '20th February 2012'

Our Rating:
Cardiff-based Conformist – aka 28-year-old Michael Simmons – is described as an ‘electronic cut-and-paste wizard’, and I have to admit that the press write-up did more than a little to pique my interest, in that it more or less reflects some of my own preoccupations, in particular those that drove me to ‘write’ my novel ‘THE PLAGIARIST’.

Conformist’s work is produced by ‘...sampling from cable TV shows, shopping channels, talk shows, pornos, the dregs of TV, hacking, editing to extreme levels of complexity, cutting and pasting together a complex patch work quilt of filthy noise the soundtrack to the cities seedy post-apocalyptic underbelly!’

The result is a grimy chunk of chip-tune chaos. It’s not subtle and it’s not pretty, and with a stonking beat and floor-shaking bassline over which samples from here there and everywhere are flung in, it’s quite a headfuck. It’s also got some serious groove, making for a release that’s audacious and brilliant.
