Review: 'Pelican'
'Ataraxia / Taraxis (EP)'

-  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '10th April 2012'

Our Rating:
Epic post-rock metallers Pelican return with an uncharacteristically succinct release, namely the Ataraxia / Taraxis EP which contains just four tracks and has a running time of a mere eighteen minutes. Still, what it lacks in duration it more than compensates in richness and quality.

Slow-burning atmospherics pave the way for the delicately chiming stroll of Ataraxia, before all cylinders fire up for the chunky, riff-centric ‘Lathe Biosas’. The solidity of ‘Parasite Colony’ is matched by its rich textures and brooding atmosphere.

Concluding with the megalithic ‘Taraxis’, this offering shows the breadth of Pelican’s range, as well as their capacity to create music that’s subtle, nuanced and ball-busting. One of the most exciting guitar-based instrumental releases I’ve heard in quite some time, ‘ Ataraxia / Taraxis’ showcases the band’s sonic dexterity and served as a timnely reminder that they’re a serious force to be reckoned with.
