Review: 'GARCIA, GUS'
'Medieval (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '28th November 2011'

Our Rating:
This is the second EP from a Brazilian singer songwriter who sings in English (he moved to London in 2007).

On the title track he sounds a little like Bruce Cockburn while elsewhere there hints of melodrama which resemble a downcast version of Jacques Brel.

The overall mood is bittersweet to the point of fatalism. On the opening song (Clocks And Crocodiles) he sings "even if I had dreams to share, I wouldn't waste your time with them".

Rhythm has some nice upbeat jangly guitar but Two For One returns to a lovelorn and funereal mood that an electric full band outro cannot lift.

The simplest, shortest and best track is saved for last. The Sailor is a slow piano ballad told from the point of view of a sea bound narrator vowing to keep love intact while is away.

There's an even flow to each of the five tracks but not enough variation or lyrical depth to make any of the songs truly memorable.
