It’s rare I grant you, but just occasionally there really is a God moving in mysterious ways within the filthy music business.
One such minor miracle is that the makers of the highly-acclaimed Thatcher bio-pic ‘The Iron Lady’ (featuring Meryl Streep in what I’m told is a superlative performance as Maggie T) had the remarkable wisdom to include long-lost, but much-loved punk classic, ‘I’m In Love with Margaret Thatcher’ from irrepressibly daft Burnley punks THE NOTSENSIBLES in the film soundtrack.
Cause for celebration, then? You betcha, because while ‘I’m in Love...’ (originally released in January 1980) may have been knocked off in about 20 minutes, its helium vocals, fizzy guitars and rampant, beer-addled chorus never date. As punk anthems go, it may not come with the era-defining gravitas of a ‘God Save The Queen’ or ‘Complete Control’, but its glorious irreverence is (once again) just the ticket in these apocalyptic times.
Ironically, the first of the two B-sides (yeah, we still observe such niceties round W&H Towers) ‘Little Boxes’ is possibly a better song and the cheap keyboards (straight outta The Fall’s ‘Live At The Witch Trials’) are worth the price of admission alone. If that’s still not enough to hook you in, then there’s still ‘Garry Bushell’s Band of The Week’: a supremely silly workout relating to the Sensies’ one-time coverage in my old rag ‘Sounds’ with (ahem) harmonies that just might (not) keep The Beach Boys awake at night before it all ends – fittingly – with a heartfelt burp.

It’s sad that it took the tragic death of their manager to get the mighty Notsensibles back together, but now they're here, make sure to lock up yer custard pies and shaving foam. The boys are back in (Northern) towns again.
