Review: 'WEISSTRONAUTS, THE'
'IN MEMPHIS 2 (EP)'

-  Label: 'SOOL RECORDINGS'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'January 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'SORE 5'

Our Rating:
‘In Memphis 2’ is the second of the Memphis E.P.s by the Weisstronauts. Like its predecessor, it comprises four tracks that were recorded at the Big Star-endorsed Ardent Studios in Memphis during a break in the band’s touring schedule. As with the first E.P., this was also recorded entirely live.

The Weisstronauts consist of Pete Weiss on guitars, Kenny Lafler on guitars, Neal Spaulding on bass, and Nathan Logus on drums. All four tracks here are instrumentals, opening up with ‘Hot Box’, a Stax / electric blues track which showcases the guitar weaving of Pete and Kenny, over a tight rhythm section. There are some surf overtones here, which blend in well with the other styles.

‘Tabasco Fiasco’ which follows is a rocking surf/twist number and again the musicianship is more than capable and proficient. ‘Carolina Woman’ is a bit of a departure, being a slightly more jazz/swing number. Finally, ‘Elation’ ends the E.P. Here, the wah wah pedal is used and there are echoes of Peter Frampton, which is certainly no bad thing.

Overall, this Boston based band produce tight, well crafted instrumentals which should appeal to fans of this genre.
