Review: 'Amongst Carrion'
'We That Should Not Be (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '2nd April 2012'

Our Rating:
Putting the heavy back into heavy metal is what Amongst Carrion are all about. ‘We That Should Not Be’ - the track and the EP as a whole – is a raging tempest of thunderous percussion and megalithic bass. Spreading the venom over six tracks, there’s not much room to breathe here, the density of the sound maintaining an almost rib cage-crushing intensity.

The songs blur together in a torrent of pounding rage. There are fleeting moments of softness on ‘Painted Red’: a picked guitar soaked in reverb surfaces before being blown away by a tsunami of double kick bass drumming and concrete slabs of guitar. Yet there’s a tangible emotional aspect to the song, a soaring guitar pitched against a trace of countermelody in the hoarse-throated vocals.

There’s not much variety in the battering percussion, but in terms of relentlessness and sheer force, Amongst Carrion have delivered a powerful statement of intent with ‘ We That Should Not Be’.
