Review: 'Blood of the Spectre'
'Blood of the Spectre (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '25th June 2012'

Our Rating:
According to the press release, since forming in 2009, ‘Blood of the Spectre have destroyed stages throughout England with their face-melting concoction of modern metal laced with entwining technical guitar passages and bone-crushing breakdowns’.

I’m assuming the destruction of stages is metaphorical, otherwise they’ll soon find themselves banned from every venue on the circuit, and I’m not sure there are that many who cater for bands who produce face-melting modern metal in the first place. I know, I’m being facetious, but sometimes, I feel like these bands are asking for it.

Sure this is heavy, but it’s also horrible. The rhythm guitar lacks definition, the chugging power chords sound more like the grinding of gears than anything musical, and the superfast fretwork of the lead guitars is just endless and very quickly becomes tiresome.

‘Interlude’ - a gently picked guitar instrumental does provide some much-needed respite, and is a genuinely sweet piece of music, with moody post-rock leanings. Sadly, it’s only a minute and a half long, and immediately after, it’s back to the grind. Thank god – or the fiery one with the good tunes – that it’s only got seven tracks.
