Review: 'NELSON, LUKAS & PROMISE OF THE REAL'
'Wasted'

-  Label: 'Tone Tide Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '3rd April 2012'

Our Rating:
If Lukas Nelson is to be believed, all you need to kick out the jams is a steady supply of dope and a band primed and ready to churn out some country-tinged Rock'n'Roll beats.

It's a straightforward enough formula made even easier by virtue of the fact that Lukas is the son of Willie and can call upon Neil Young as a friend and 'distant mentor'.

Shakey it was who suggested that the best way to capture their 'New Vintage Sound' on tape was to record it live (at Moose Lodge Studios, Nashville) in analog. This method proves to be well suited to the set of road tunes written by Lukas on his iPhone while on the Willie Nelson Country Throwaway Tour.

Joints and jams are at the heart of the 14 songs on the album for a daunting 70 minutes of music which includes a tedious 15 minute dropout boogie as the closing tune (If I Saw The Ocean).

It's on the handful of slower songs ,like Frame Of Mind, Time is and I Won't Fail Her, that he sounds most like his dad. The rest sound like a poor man's Crazy Horse.

Lukas explains the title of his second album thus: "It's about the idea of wasting your time, your life, your creativity and reminding yourself to stay true to your values and ideals". In this context he claims that "it all makes sense when you lose you head" on the title track and "It's not what you're dealt, it's how you're dealing with it" on Wasn't That Great.

Putting such a positive slant on this slacker philosophy is not one I'd personally want to subscribe to nor would I recommend an album that taps into rock clichés without the essential heart and soul.
