Review: 'UGGERI, MATTEO /LUCA MAURI/FRANCESCO GIANNICO'
'Pagetos'

-  Label: 'Boring Machines'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '8th April 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'BM039'

Our Rating:
Pagetos is the fourth and final chapter of the 'Between the elements Quadrilogy' of which the previous three 'chapters' have been : Nefelodhus, Erimos and Kapnos - Greek words which mean cloudiness, desert and smoke respectively.

The trio on this record is a meeting of minds and instruments of three talented Italians with impressive CVs of collaborative experimental, ambient , electro-acoustic and avant-garde works.

Matteo Uggeri is the common element of the four releases, the first of which were conceived with Maurizio Bianchi/MB who has been described (by whom?) as an 'industrial master'.

For Pagetos, Francesco Giannico and Luca Mauri provide subtle non-industrial musical brushstrokes on piano and guitar.

Uggeri, himself, is credited for trumpets, drums and field recordings. There are also cello samples and (on one track) violin .

The title apparently translates as 'morning frost' which explains the photos on the album sleeve of snowy scenes as seen through a cool blue filter.

Each of the six tracks references glacial conditions of frost, cold air, icy leaves and freezing fog (Calaverna) before culminating in final track entitled Melt.

It opens with Ground Frost Breeding and what sounds like someone trudging along an icy path. The whole album evokes that tranquil, beautifully desolate mood of being outdoors in sub zero temperatures or after a fresh fall of snow.

It is an elegant free flowing recording best absorbed as a single 40 minute piece rather than as six separate tracks and, despite the wintry theme, it offers a warming and comforting listening experience.
