‘The Umbrella Shop’ is Edinburgh based EMPORIUM'S latest single on the back of their best of album ‘From Another Planet’ and showcases the band’s talent for great harmonies and some classic keyboard pop.
The title track is some slow melodic keyboard pop, with some lyrics that stand out, singer songwriter Ewan McKenzie mentioning about “living under gaslight (while) most of London sleeps”. The chorus on this track is uplifting, and hopefully should serve to gain the band some airplay: - “Thank Christ for being old/ Thank Christ for being young/ For reaching for the stars, and ending up like this.”
The ‘B’ side is the wonderfully titled ‘She Won’t Come Out To Play’, which again is playful keyboard based pop, and rather than being just a song, it’s a mini vignette: - “She gets up from the bed, and she realises that she doesn’t really want to.

She lies back down again. The morning sun, it isn’t acting like a friend...She’s waiting for the night. She’s hoping that it might bring her some redemption.”
Added to this, there is also a ‘radio edit’ of ‘The Umbrella Shop’, which makes this a perfect starting point for those who haven’t acquainted themselves with the band as yet.
