I was sitting around, wondering what to do with myself, when I began to wonder why there aren’t more singer-songwriters around. I mean, you just never hear of them nowadays. Where have they all gone?
Thank heavens then for Simon Berridge, who records under the name of Bromide. His work, as represented by ‘Some Electric Sometimes’ stands like a beacon of uniqueness.
Ok, I’ll quit with the sarcasm and cut the guy some slack. In fairness, amongst the pretty average acoustic-led strum-alongs – which are pleasant enough and lyrically deft enough, too – he does a demonstrate a knack for stadium indie rock infused with wonky poppiness and played with a lo-fi edge (which would be the electric, I suppose).

The songs are short – and occasionally sweet – rarely passing the three-minute mark. You can’t accuse him of being indulgent, and the brevitry of the compositions is testament to Berridge’s ability to craft concise snapshots in song.
The effect of Bromide’s work might not be immediate or truly electric, but this album’s definitely a grower.
