Review: 'Cast of Cheers, The'
'Human Elevator'

-  Label: 'School Boy Error'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '20th August 2012'

Our Rating:
The Cast of Cheers have been getting a lot of coverage lately, and while the name’s certainly memorable (if rather daft), the cynic in me suspected they might struggle to match it musically.

Their latest single release, lifted from their debut album ‘Family’, blows away those suspicions in an instant. ‘Human Elevator’ is buoyed along by a glammy beat and an insistent bass and rhythm that’s half Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ and half ‘Rubber Bullets’ by 10cc, and gives way to a bouncy chorus with an instant hook that has ‘earworm’ written all over it. Don’t think it’s happy, clappy wide-eyed indie pop, though: ‘Human Elevator’ comes with serrated edges that give it an essential bite. There are some nice touches of fractal guitar that trail in and out, too, bringing a brooding post-punk facet to the sound.

Given the mood-lifting capacity of this single, The Cast of Cheers fulfil their promise / threat of being a human elevator, and surely there’s no way in the world they can possibly fail to be massive.
