Review: 'Latitudes'
'Individuation'

-  Label: 'Shelsmusic'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: 'Out now'-  Catalogue No: 'Shels027'

Our Rating:
"Individuation" is the second full-length release from UK post rock behemoths Latitudes, just released by the ever fabulous Shelsmusic label.

While described just then as "post-rock" this much heavier and hardcore than other bands of the genre, closer to Isis or early Pelican in sound and mood than for example, Explosions In The Sky.

Opening track, "Hyperstatic Forge" is wholly instrumental, driven by thunderous drums and huge, technical guitar riffs. The track ends with one of the most enormous riffs known to humankind.

Second track "Imitation Ruin" is slower and more moody, with vocals provided by Adam Symonds (ex-Eden Maine). These are not the grunting, hardcore vocals you might expect though; they are clean, melodic, and at times almost verging on the angelic. This element is one of the factors that sets this apart - it does not always do what you expect.

"Vortice Of Malady" is simply epic in all senses, while "Isleward" introduces electronics/organ into the mix. It is a more restrained track, but still has riffage, while more Symonds vocals add texture.

"Shapeshifting" lives up to the title with quiet vocal harmonies and powerful riffs taking it in turns to be the focus.

"Metabolic Pathways" is very different with organ and piano provided by Robert Crowley, in addition to electronic elements meaning this is the least metal track on the album. It does still have tension though, sounding like a storm brewing. "The Glacial Body" continues the electronic touches, but combines this with a restrained post-metal sound akin to Red Sparowes with vocals. The track builds towards a superb drum-driven climax.

Closing track "Individuation (Telos)" is epic, undulating, and quite superb. It has atmospheric electronic parts bookended by thick riffage and thumping drums. There are no vocals but the music says what needs to be said here.

Excellent.
