Review: 'MAGGIORE, LUCIANO & FRANCESCO BRASINI'
'How To Increase Light In The Ear'

-  Label: 'Boring Machines'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: 'September 2012'

Our Rating:
I like the instructional title of this album, which gives the impression that it is a record conceived more as an educational tool rather than a piece of disposable entertainment.

The two musicians may not have had such an explicit didactic purpose in mind but listening to the sustained high pitched waves does have the same function as the prolonged drones of La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music and countless others who have used this blueprint.

This effect is indirectly referred to in the bio for Luciano Maggiore by highlighting his interest in developing "immersive experiences" and creating "perceptual displacements".

Maggiore works with tape recorders and electronic devices whereas his musical partner Francesco Brasini uses self-built guitars.

This is the Bologna-based duo's second album; their previous release Chasm Achanés being based on the lower end of the frequency scale.

Fundamental to these recordings is discipline since it requires a special kind of restraint to maintain the subtle shifts in tone. The temptation on the part of the listener is to impose a structure on these two pieces which isn't there.

We are so accustomed to hearing music that works hard to engage us that to be immersed in sound that doesn't impose itself and has such a limited sonic range requires a level of patience and adjustment that will alienate all but a minority of listeners drawn to this kind of sonic experience.

In other words you must be a willing participant of the experience in the same way that a person seeking peace of mind will choose a meditation technique.

Be advised therefore that this album consists of two untitled tracks which last 21:48 minutes and 29:46 minutes respectively.

It worked for me but describing the content in detail is pointless, describing the effect depends on the individual.
