This one’s been out for a while, and it’s been in my to-review pile for even longer, but every time I sat down with the intention of committing words to the virtual page, I found my brain a void. Haxan Cloak’s sonorous exercise in rumbling tension as broad and deep as any ocean is seemingly capable of almost complete cerebral erasure.
Recorded as a live session incorporating elements of the Haxan Cloak live show as it had evolved over time while touring his debut album, ‘The Men Parted the Sea’ takes the form of a single track spanning some 27 minutes, and builds between a broad range of textures and moods.

The long, droning choral loops are mismatched, creating an irregular-seeming glitch that jolts the listener’s senses just a little. Tribal beats break out across the rippling surface, and before long everything begins to go haywire, an explosion of temporal disruptions and arrhythmic stutters. Often making for a challenging listen, ‘The Men Parted the Sea’ is a definite progression from its predecessor, but no less compelling.
