Bleak Falls do melodic hardcore. They invite us to ‘imagine the Deftones and Cancer Bats having a bar fight to Nirvana blasting on the jukebox’. I tried imagining this for a while, before slipping the disc in the player to see how their interpretation corresponded with mine.
Well not entirely unfavourably, I’m surprised to say. ‘Morning Light’ is a short angry blast of slow, heavy guitars and sets the template for an EP that places the bulk of its emphasis on the hardcore over the melodic to create a blazing, slow-burning anger.
‘Dear Brother’ marks a change of tone, pace and mood, and to good effect. Instead of anger, the clean guitar sound conveys a more melancholic feel, the hoarse-throated vocals a deep anguish.
Bleak, weighty and rage-filled, yet equally multi-faceted and dynamic, ‘Another Rainy Day’ is a surprisingly assured debut.
