Review: 'LEFT, JENNIFER'
'Diggory (EP)'

-  Label: 'Singing Hinny'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '5th November 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'SHM002CD'

Our Rating:
This is an EP of two halves.

One is sharp, subtle and open to experiment, the other is efficient but fairly predictable commercial pop.

Jennifer Left was born in Newcastle but is now based in Brighton. She has a husky voice to match her image as a mysterious and glamorous femme-fatale.

Diggory seems to be an invented word to replace 'jiggery', as in the rhythmic slang expression for shady double dealing - jiggery-pokery. The song with this title ,and official single, is a jazzy swing piece tailor-made for daytime radio.

It's a lively tune but one of those songs you will probably get sick and tired of after a few hearings.

Far more interesting is sensual rendering of New Order's Temptation that boldly presents this song in a fresh new light.

The other two tunes are remixes of the title track; the first Alternative Diggory Pokery mix may send you to sleep while sparkly makeover by 'Banks' will wake you up.

The EP makes me intrigued enough to want to know in which direction her future releases take.

Time will tell.
